Why I Make Art: Contemporary Artists’ Stories About Life and Work presents conversations recorded between 2016 and 2020—four tumultuous years in America and around the world. This title will be available worldwide May 2022, published by Atelier Éditions.

Why I Make Art offers readers an intimate, contemplative view from thirty remarkable creators with compelling stories, entertaining and thoughtful anecdotes, examining themes as varied as music and skateboarding, immigration and statelessness, community and identity.

Each chapter connects us with Alfred’s subjects as he expertly delves into the practices, influences and life stories of inspirational emerging and established art stars. Illustrated with stunning artwork throughout, the featured artists’ work spans multiple mediums including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, performance and land art.

About the contributors

Brian Alfred (b.1974 in Pittsburgh, PA) received his BFA in 1997 from Pennsylvania State University and his MFA in 1999 from Yale University and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1999. He has exhibited internationally, and his work can be found in many permanent collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia. He is represented by Miles McEnery Gallery and Maho Kubota Gallery. The Sound & Vision podcast was launched in 2016, since when over 300 episodes have aired. Alfred lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Hrishikesh Hirway (b.1979 in Peabody, MA) is a musician and podcast creator. He’s the host, creator, and producer of Song Exploder, an award-winning podcast and Netflix original television series, in which musicians break down the creative process behind their songs. He has released four albums under the moniker The One AM Radio, produced and hosted multiple award-winning podcasts, and has written and recorded original scores for movies and television. Hirway lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
